Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, Chennai
Madras Service Commission was established under an Act of the Madras Legislature in 1929. After re-organisation of the states in 1957, several state level commissions were constituted. The Madras Service Commission became the Madras Public Service Commission with headquarters at Madras in the year 1957. During 1970, when the name of the state was changed to Tamil Nadu, the Madras Public Service Commission was renamed as the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC).
Articles 316 to 319 of the Constitution of India deal with the structure of State Public Service Commissions. Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission is headed by the Chairman and comprises of fourteen other members, all appointed by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, in accordance with the above provisions of the Constitution of India.
Under Article 320 of the Constitution of India, the Commission is, inter-alia, required to be consulted on all matters relating to recruitment to civil services and posts. The functions of the Commission under Article 320 of the Constitution are:
- Conduct for appointment to the services of the State examinations
- Direct by selection through interviews. recruitment
- Appointment of officers on promotion/deputation/absorption.
- Framing and amendment of Recruitment for various services and posts under the Government Rules
- Relating to different Civil Services. Disciplinary cases
- Advising the Government on any matter referred to the Commission
The Collector of the District is the Chief Co-Ordinator for conducting TNPSC Examinations in each District.
Selection of Examination Centres
- On receipt of letters from TNPSC for conducting examination, Selection of centres will be initiated in following types/categories.
- Government Schools/Corporation Schools/Government Aided Schools/Private Schools/Government Colleges/Private Arts Colleges and Engineering Colleges.
- Centres will be fixed based on Pucca buildings with water and Toilet facilities/having lighting/fan facilities/proper transport facilities such as buses/trains.
- Centres will be selected with the strength to accommodate a minimum of 250 to 300 candidates to attend the examinations.
- In each room 20 candidates will write the examinations.
- Ground floor should be allocated for the disabled candidates in the examination venues.
- All the above facts will be taken into account for the selection of centres with utmost care.
